Interview with a Doula

The interview process is important for both the birthing mother and the doula.  It is an opportunity to get to know one another, and be sure we will work well together during the birth process.  Listed below are some topics you may want to discuss with any doula you are considering hiring.  These are suggested questions only; feel free to talk with your doula about whatever concerns and questions you have.

Questions for you to ask your doula:

  • How did you come to be interested in helping women give birth?
  • How long have you been a doula, and where did you receive your certification?
  • What can I expect from you?  What is included in your services?
  • How can you help me achieve my goals in birth?
  • What do you bring to the birth?
  • What is your philosophy of birth?

Questions your Doula may ask you:

  • Where do you plan to give birth?  Why did you choose that location?
  • How do you feel about pain medication? Induction? Cesarean Section?  Episiotomy?
  • What kinds of things will you want with you in the hospital for your comfort?
  • What are your hopes for this birth?
  • What are your fears for this birth?
  • How well do you tolerate pain, and what do you do to deal with it?
  • What kinds of things do you do to relax?  Will you want massage, water, soothing music?
  • Is there something about you that I need to know, ie fear of needles, doesn't like touch when agitated, allergic to lavender?

More important than the answers to any specific question is the rapport you feel with your doula.  As you reflect on the initial interview and decide who will be your doula, consider the following:

  • Do you feel comfortable with her?
  • Will she work well with family and friends participating in your birth?
  • Do you have confidence in her ability to support you during birth?
  • Do you think she will listen to you well?
